みなさん、おはようございます。
Good morning, everyone.
日々の生活に様々な忙しさや重荷がある中ですが、こうして神様の前に共に集い、礼拝をささげられる恵みを心から感謝します。
In the midst of the various busyness and burdens of our daily lives, I am deeply grateful for the grace that allows us to gather together before God and offer our worship.
さて、今日のテーマは「柔和」ですが、皆さんはこの言葉にどんなイメージをお持ちでしょうか。
Now, today’s theme is "meekness" (or gentleness). What kind of image comes to mind when you hear this word?
誰に何を言われてもヘラヘラと笑って受け流すような、気弱で大人しい姿でしょうか。
Do you picture someone who is timid and passive, just smiling weakly and letting people say whatever they want?
しかし、聖書が語る「柔和」は、決してそのような消極的な弱さではありません。
However, the "meekness" spoken of in the Bible is by no means such a passive weakness.
むしろ、聖書が教える本当の強さとは、力任せの『硬さ』ではなく、しなやかな『柔らかさ』の中にあります。
Rather, the true strength that the Bible teaches lies not in brute-force "hardness," but in a resilient "softness."
そのことを考えるために、私たちの日常の身近な一コマから、少しクスッと笑えるお話をご紹介しましょう。
To help us reflect on this, let me share a slightly humorous story from a familiar scene in our daily lives.
それは、冷凍庫から出したばかりの「カチカチに凍った硬いアイスクリーム」に挑むスプーンの物語です。
It is the story of a spoon taking on "rock-hard ice cream" straight out of the freezer.
「絶対に負けない」と真っ向から力勝負を挑んだ頑丈な金属スプーンは、アイスの硬さに力任せに抵抗した結果、無残にも根元からぐにゃりと曲がって二度と使えなくなってしまいました。
A sturdy metal spoon, determined "never to lose," challenged the ice cream to a head-on power struggle. As a result of resisting the hardness of the ice cream with brute force, it bent miserably at the base and became completely unusable.
しかし、その横にあった100円ショップのペラペラなプラスチック製スプーンはどうだったでしょう。
But what about the flimsy plastic spoon from the 100-yen shop sitting right next to it?
アイスに触れた瞬間、まるで「あ、失礼します」とお辞儀をするように、ふにゃっと柔らかくしなることで力を逃がし、折れることなく、溶けた部分から少しずつ美味しくアイスを削り取ってくれたのです。
The moment it touched the ice cream, as if saying, "Oh, excuse me," it bent softly and flexibly, deflecting the force. Without snapping, it managed to scrape away the ice cream bit by bit from the melted parts, allowing someone to enjoy it.
聖書が語る「柔和」とは、まさにこのプラスチックスプーンのような、しなやかな強さのことです。
The "meekness" that the Bible speaks of is precisely this kind of resilient strength, much like that plastic spoon.
自己主張をぶつけ合ってポキリと折れてしまう世界の中で、本当の強さと平和をもたらすこの生き方を、共に静かに味わいましょう。
In a world where people clash with their self-assertions and end up snapping, let us quietly reflect together on this way of life that brings true strength and peace.
イエス様が「柔和な者は幸いです。その人たちは地を受け継ぐからです」と語られたとき、当時の人々は大きな衝撃、あるいは強い戸惑いを覚えたはずです。
When Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth," the people of that time must have felt a great shock or a deep sense of bewilderment.
ローマ帝国の過酷な支配下にあったユダヤ人にとって、奪われた土地（国土）を取り戻すことこそが民族の悲願でした。
For the Jewish people living under the harsh oppression of the Roman Empire, reclaiming their stolen land (their homeland) was their greatest national desire.
そのためには、「強く、激しく、武器を取って戦う」ことこそが正義であり、おとなしく従う「柔和」など、弱さであり敗北の象徴だったからです。
To achieve this, fighting "strongly, fiercely, and with weapons" was seen as righteousness, while a quietly submissive "meekness" was viewed as a symbol of weakness and defeat.
しかしここでイエス様が使われた「柔和」というギリシャ語は、全く異なる絵を描いていました。
However, the Greek word for "meek" used here by Jesus paints a completely different picture.
これは、野山を暴れ回る「野生の馬」が訓練を受け、乗り手である主人の手綱にピタッと従うようになった状態を指す言葉です。
It refers to a state where a "wild horse" that once ran rampant through fields and mountains undergoes training and learns to yield perfectly to the reins of its master.
つまり、力が失われたのではなく、その強大な力が「正しい主人の支配下で完全にコントロールされている状態」なのです。
In other words, its power has not been lost; rather, its immense strength is "fully controlled under the governance of its rightful master."
自分の力で強引に土地をもぎ取ろうとする暴走をやめ、神様の手綱に自らを明け渡す姿勢、それこそが主の語られた柔和です。
To stop running wild in an attempt to forcefully seize land by one's own power, and instead surrender oneself to God's reins—that is the very meekness of which our Lord spoke.
この5節が語る神学的な真理の核心は、「地を受け継ぐ」という約束にあります。
The core of the theological truth spoken in verse 5 lies in the promise to "inherit the earth."
私たちは通常, 自分の陣地や権利は、自己主張し、戦い、自力で勝ち取るものだと考えています。
We usually think of our territory or rights as things to be asserted, fought for, and won through our own efforts.
しかし、聖書はそれを「勝ち取るもの（征服）」ではなく、「受け継ぐもの（相続）」として提示します。
However, the Bible presents it not as something to be "won (conquered)," but as something to be "inherited."
相続とは、自分の努力や功績で勝ち取るものではなく、愛されている子どもとして、天の父からただ信頼のうちに受け取るプレゼントなのです。
An inheritance is not earned through one's own efforts or merits; it is a gift received in trust from our Heavenly Father, simply as His beloved children.
自分を強く見せ、怒りや暴力で他者をねじ伏せようとする人は、一見何かを支配しているように見えますが、実は常に「いつ奪われるか分からない」という不安と戦う、恐れの奴隷になっています。
Those who try to make themselves look strong, attempting to suppress others with anger or violence, may seem to be in control on the surface. In reality, however, they are slaves to fear, constantly battling the anxiety that "it could be taken away at any moment."
本当の柔和とは、自らの正しさや権利の主張を一度神様に委ね、神様が必ず最も良いものを与えてくださると信頼することです。
True meekness means entrusting our own righteousness and claims of rights to God, trusting that He will surely give us what is best.
この天地を造られた神様を父と呼ぶとき、私たちの心には、この世の誰も、どんな状況も脅かすことのできない、真に満ち足りた「天の御国」という最高の領土がすでに与えられているのです。
When we call the God who created the heavens and the earth our Father, our hearts are already given the ultimate territory—the truly fulfilling "Kingdom of Heaven"—which no one in this world and no circumstance can ever threaten.
ある牧場に、誰の指示も受け付けず、近づく者すべてを蹴り飛ばす一頭の気性の荒い野生の馬がいました。
On a certain ranch, there was a fierce wild horse that refused to take orders from anyone and kicked at anyone who came near.
人々はその荒々しさを「強さ」と呼び、誰も近づけませんでした。
People called that wildness "strength," and no one dared to approach it.
しかし、ある老練な調教師だけは力でねじ伏せようとせず、毎日ただ傍らに立ち、静かに声をかけ続けました。
However, a seasoned trainer chose not to overpower it by force; instead, he simply stood by its side every day, quietly speaking to it.
やがて、馬は調教師の温かい眼差しに信頼を寄せ、その手綱を素直に受け入れたのです。
Eventually, the horse placed its trust in the trainer's warm gaze and gently accepted his reins.
訓練を終えたその馬は、かつての荒々しさを失ったのではなく、その強大な力を「最も必要な人のために」コントロールできるようになりました。
Having completed its training, the horse did not lose its former wild strength; rather, it learned to control that immense power "for those who needed it most."
後にその馬は、障害を持つ子どもたちのリハビリを支える、世界で最も優しいセラピーホースとして、傷ついた子どもたちの心にそっと寄り添う、かけがえのない存在となったのです。
Later, the horse became the world's gentlest therapy horse, supporting the rehabilitation of children with disabilities and gently drawing close to the hearts of wounded children as an irreplaceable presence.
私たちの日常も、周囲に溢れる怒りの声や、家庭や職場での人間関係の衝突に満ちています。
Our daily lives are also filled with voices of anger echoing around us, and conflicts in relationships at home or in the workplace.
「やられたらやり返す」という野生のままで生きるのをやめ、神様の優しい手綱に自分の感情をゆだねてみませんか。
Why not stop living like a wild animal, in a cycle of "eye for an eye," and instead entrust our emotions to God's gentle reins?
それこそが、周囲を癒やす本物の強さなのです。
That is the true strength that heals those around us.
今週、私たちは再びそれぞれの慌ただしい日常、そして時に理不尽な現実の中へと遣わされていきます。
This week, we are sent out once again into our respective busy daily lives and, at times, into unreasonable realities.
怒りや焦りに心が支配されそうになったとき、どうか「自分は神様の手綱に守られているのだ」ということを思い出してください。
When your heart is on the verge of being overwhelmed by anger or anxiety, please remember: "I am protected by God's reins."
私たちの人生は、世の「勝った、負けた」という、狭く短い物差しで測られるものではありません。
Our lives are not measured by the narrow, short yardsticks of this world's "winning and losing."
この地上で起こる理不尽な出来事や、人間関係の中で受ける小さな傷も、神様の愛という壮大で永遠のスケールの中では、やがて美しく溶かされていく一瞬の出来事に過ぎないのです。
The unreasonable things that happen on this earth and the small wounds we receive in our relationships are, in the grand and eternal scale of God's love, nothing more than fleeting moments that will eventually be beautifully dissolved.
だからこそ、自分の力で物事を強引に解決しようとする重荷を降ろし、主にすべてをゆだねて、その前に静まりましょう。
That is why we should lay down the heavy burden of trying to resolve things forcefully by our own strength, entrust everything to the Lord, and be still before Him.
神様があなたの人生を最も良い方法で成し遂げ、あなたをご自身の平和の器として輝かせてくださいます。
God will fulfill your life in the best possible way and make you shine as an instrument of His peace.
主を自らの喜びとし、柔和な者として歩む皆さんの上に、決して揺らぐことのない天の確かな平安と、豊かな祝福が、今週歩む皆さんの足元に、溢れるばかりに注がれますように。
May the unshakable, sure peace of heaven and abundant blessings be poured out overwhelmingly upon the path of each one of you walking this week as the meek, making the Lord your joy.
