God's Word is Sweeter Than Honey (Psalm 19:1-14)
みことば蜜より甘い（詩篇19:1-14）
Good morning, everyone. This week, we will take a break from the "Beatitudes" and bring you a message from the Psalms in the Old Testament.
みなさん、おはようございます。今週の説教は、「八福の教え」を一度お休みし、旧約聖書の詩篇からお届けします。
By the way, have you looked up at the night sky slowly lately? There are many good things about Toyosaka. One of them is that there aren't many tall buildings, so you can see the stars clearly from anywhere at night.
さて、皆さんは最近、ゆっくりと夜空を見上げたことがあるでしょうか。豊栄の良いところはいっぱいありますが、その一つはあまり高い建物がないので、夜になるとどこにいても星がよく見えることではないでしょうか。
When we talk about "looking up at the night sky," some of you might remember the famous song "Look Up at the Stars in the Night Sky" by Kyu Sakamoto. This might be a nostalgic story for people around my age or a little older.
「夜空を見上げる」といえば、私と同世代か、もう少し上の方には懐かしい話かもしれませんが、坂本九さんの名曲「見上げてごらん夜の星を」を思い出す方もいらっしゃると思います。
Actually, this song was originally the theme song for a musical. It was about young people who worked during the day and studied at a night high school.
実はこの歌はもともと、昼間は働き、夜は定時制高校で学ぶ若者たちを描いたミュージカルの主題歌でした。
It was over 60 years ago, during what we call the period of rapid economic growth. However, behind that bright growth, there were people working in factories and construction sites with poor conditions. They worked so hard that it ruined their health.
今から60年以上前、いわゆる高度経済成長の時代です。しかしその華やかな成長の裏には、衛生環境の悪い工場や建設現場で、体を壊すほど働き続けていた人々がいました。
The young people in this story must have felt sad, too. In their hard work, they felt like they were just treated as tools in society.
この物語の若者たちも、過酷な労働の中で、自分たちが社会の歯車のように扱われている悲哀を感じていたのだと思います。
Even so, they believed that Japan's future would be bright. So, they kept working and learning. Then, they stop for a moment and look up at the night sky.
それでも、これからの日本はきっと明るいはずだと信じて、彼らは働き、学び続けました。そしてふと立ち止まり、夜空を見上げます。
When they do, the light of the small stars, which have no words, gently whispers to them about "a small happiness."
すると、言葉を持たない小さな星の光が、彼らに向かって「ささやかな幸せ」をそっと語りかけてくるのです。
When people feel sadness or anxiety that they cannot express in words, they naturally look up to heaven. That might be the same for all people across all times.
人は、言葉にならない悲しみや不安を感じたとき、自然と天を仰ぎます。それは時代を超えて万国共通なのかもしれません。
David, the writer of Psalm 19, was also one of those people. Throughout his life, he faced many pressures. He looked up at the night sky, trying to hold back his tears.
この詩篇19篇の作者であるダビデもまた、生涯を通じて様々な重圧の中で、涙をこらえるようにして夜空を見上げた人の一人でした。
Today, through this Psalm, I want us to lift our eyes to the glory of heaven. Let's experience together the blessing of our souls being revived by God's Word.
本日は、この詩篇を通して私たちの視線を天の栄光へと引き上げ、御言葉によって魂が生き返る恵みをご一緒に味わいたいと思います。
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
「天は神の栄光を語り告げ、大空は御手のわざを告げ知らせる」。
David started this Psalm by praising the grand universe.
ダビデはこの詩篇を、壮大な宇宙の賛美から書き始めました。
When he was young, he worked as a shepherd and often slept outside in the wilderness. He must have spent his nights literally looking up at the countless stars shining in the clear sky of Israel.
若い頃、羊飼いとして荒野で野宿を重ねていた彼は、イスラエルの澄み切った夜空に輝く無数の星々を、文字通り見上げて夜を過ごしたはずです。
There are no words or sounds there. But the overwhelming starry sky and the strong sun that rises every day were speaking loudly about God's greatness with a voice without words.
そこに言葉や音声はありません。しかし、その圧倒的な星空や、毎日規則正しく力強く昇る太陽は、言葉なき声で神の偉大さを雄弁に語りかけていました。
At that time, people in nearby countries feared and worshiped the sun itself as a god.
当時の周辺諸国の人々は、太陽そのものを神として恐れ、拝んでいました。
However, David clearly sings that no matter how powerful the sun looks, it is simply something God created.
しかしダビデは、どんなに力強く見える太陽であっても、それは神が造られたものにすぎないのだと明確に歌っています。
The world is not ruled by huge, visible powers or the threats of nature. There is a Creator who rules over all of them.
世界を支配しているのは、目に見える巨大な力や自然の脅威ではありません。それらを統べ治めておられる創造主がおられるのです。
Up to verse 6 in the first half, David sings about this "message of nature without words."
ダビデは前半の６節までで、この「言葉なき自然の啓示」を歌い上げます。
However, his eyes did not stop there. Great nature teaches us about God's greatness. But it does not teach us how we should live each day, or how much God loves us.
しかし、彼の視線はそこで留まりませんでした。大自然は神の偉大さを教えてくれますが、私たちが日々どのように生きるべきか、そして私たちがどれほど神に愛されているかは教えてくれません。
So, from verse 7, David's thoughts move to the "law of the Lord," which is written in clear words. That means God's Word.
そこでダビデの思いは、７節から明確な言葉で記された「主のおしえ」、すなわち神のみことばへと移ります。
Verse 8 says, "The commands of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart."
８節には「主の戒めは真っ直ぐで人の心を喜ばせ」と記されています。
The "commands" mentioned here are never strict rules to tie us down. They are a loving guide and signpost for us to live richly as true human beings.
ここで言われている「戒め」とは、決して私たちを縛り付ける窮屈な規則のことではありません。それは、私たちが本来の人間らしく豊かに生きるための、愛にあふれた人生の指針であり、道しるべです。
Law, commands, and rules?they all refer to the same Word of God.
おしえ、証し、戒め、仰せ、すべて同じみことばを指しています。
Our souls can dry up from anxiety, fear, and daily worries. God's Word pours the rich water of life into our dried-up souls and gives us the strength to stand up again.
みことばは、不安や恐れ、日々の心配事で干からびてしまった魂に、豊かな命の水を注ぎ、再び立ち上がる力を与えてくれるものなのです。
Then, in verse 10, David expresses the value of God's Word like this: "They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb."
そしてダビデは10節で、神の言葉の価値をこのように表現します。「金よりも、多くの純金よりも、慕わしく、蜜よりも、蜜蜂の巣の滴りよりも甘い」。
The other day, I was watching TV in a hospital waiting room, and a report from Sapporo left a deep impression on me.
先日、病院の待合室でテレビを見ていると、札幌からのリポートが印象に残りました。
Sapporo is a big city, but it has a lot of flowers and greenery. They use this environment to keep tens of thousands of honeybees on the roofs of several buildings near Sapporo Odori Park to collect honey.
札幌市は、大都市でありながらも大変、花や緑が多い町だそうで、それを利用して、札幌大通公園そばの、いくつかのビルの屋上で何万匹もの蜜蜂を飼育し、蜜を集めているそうです。
The reporter tasted the honey and shared his thoughts, and the lady who keeps the bees said this: "Please come back next week. The taste will change."
リポーターがその蜂蜜を味わって、感想を述べるのですが、養蜂のおばちゃんがこう言うのです。「来週、また来て下さい。味が変わりますから」。
The reporter asked, "Does the taste of the honey change every week?" She answered, "Yes, because the flowers change."
「週によって蜜の味が変わるんですか」と聞くと、「はい、花が変わりますから」。
This might be exactly what it means that God's Word is sweeter than honey. It is not always the exact same sweetness.
まさにみことば蜜より甘い、とはそういうことかもしれません。いつも同じ甘さではないのです。
And we can say that the "flowers" represent the different problems we are facing. When one problem goes away, a new problem comes.
そして「花」が表しているのは、私たちが抱えている、問題それぞれの事だと言えます。一つの問題が去れば、また新しい問題がやってくる。
In last week's sermon, I talked about how if we look only at Jesus, our problems won't bother us.
先週の礼拝説教では、イエスだけを見るならば、問題が気にならなくなる、という話をしました。
But today, I want to say that even our problems can add color to our lives, like the flowers of each season.
しかし今日はむしろ、問題さえも、折々の花のように、私たちの人生を彩るものになる。
It is exactly God's Word and the grace of salvation that gives us such an amazing view of life.
そういう飛び抜けた人生観を与えてくれるのが、まさに神のことばであり、救いの恵みである、と言えるのではないでしょうか。
Now, I would like to tell you a story about a woman.
ここで、ある女性のお話をしたいと思います。
During World War II, Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch watchmaker, was arrested for hiding Jewish people. She was sent to a concentration camp.
第二次世界大戦中、オランダの時計職人であったコリー・テン・ブームは、ユダヤ人をかくまった罪で逮捕され、強制収容所へと送られました。
It was a literal darkness, ruled by inhuman treatment and the fear of death. It is said that Corrie's beloved sister died of illness in the same camp due to lack of food.
そこは非人間的な扱いと死の恐怖が支配する、文字通りの暗闇でした。コリーの愛する姉は同じ収容所で栄養失調のために病死したと言います。
However, Corrie miraculously managed to bring a small Bible into the camp.
しかしコリーは、奇跡的に小さな聖書を収容所に持ち込むことができたのです。
Inside the dark barracks full of fleas and bad smells, after a day of harsh labor, she would quietly start reading the Bible. Gradually, women who were in deep despair gathered around her.
ノミがはびこり、悪臭の漂う薄暗いバラックの中で、一日の過酷な労働を終えた後、彼女がそっと聖書を読み始めると、絶望の淵にあった女性たちが次第に集まってきました。
The words of God's love spoken there were truly "more precious than pure gold, and sweeter than honey."
そこで語られる神の愛の言葉は、まさに「純金よりも慕わしく、蜜よりも甘い」ものでした。
In that extreme situation with no promise of living tomorrow, and in a place where no gold or treasure had any value, only the words of the Bible brought their souls back to life. It kept their human dignity and hope alive.
明日生きられる保証など何一つない極限状態の中で、どんな金銀財宝も価値を持たないその場所で、聖書の言葉だけが彼女たちの魂を生き返らせ、人としての尊厳と希望を保たせたのです。
Our daily lives are also surrounded by invisible "darkness," even if it takes a different form than a concentration camp.
私たちの日常もまた、強制収容所とは違う形ではあっても、目に見えない「暗闇」に囲まれています。
It is the darkness of an uncertain society, worries about our families and our children's futures, and our own weaknesses.
先行きの見えない社会の状況、家族や子どもの将来への心配、そして自分自身の弱さという暗闇です。
But the same "light"?God's Word?that lit up the souls of the women in those dark barracks is right here in our hands today.
しかし、あの薄暗いバラックの中で女性たちの魂を照らし出したのと同じ「光」であるみことばが、今、私たちの手元にもあるのです。
As long as we have the words of light that break through this darkness, we will never be swallowed by despair.
この暗闇を打ち破る光の言葉が私たちにある限り、私たちが絶望に飲み込まれることは決してありません。
Still, we are not perfect. As David prays from verse 12 onwards, we sometimes commit "hidden faults."
それでも、私たちは完全ではありません。ダビデが12節以降で祈っているように、私たちは時に「隠れた過ち」を犯してしまいます。
We try so hard, thinking "I have to protect my family on my own" or "I have to support the church with my own hands." Because of this, we can sometimes become proud.
「自分の力でなんとか家族を守らなければ」「自分の手で教会を支えなければ」と必死になるあまり、傲慢になってしまうこともあります。
But please don't worry. God knows all of these weaknesses. That is exactly why David prayed at the end, "my Rock and my Redeemer."
しかしご安心ください。そのような弱さを、神様はすべてご存知なのですから。だからこそ、ダビデは最後に「わが岩、わが贖い主よ」と祈りました。
The foundation of our lives is not our hard work or our money. It is the Lord Himself, the Rock that will never shake.
私たちの人生の土台は、私たちの頑張りや経済力ではありません。決して揺らぐことのない岩であられる、主ご自身です。
When we stand on this Rock, I deeply hope that the honey-like sweetness of God's Word will be passed down from parents to children, and to the next generation. It will not be by force, but with joy.
この岩の上に立つとき、親から子へ、そして次の世代へと、神の言葉の、蜜のような甘さが、決して強制ではなく、喜びと共に受け継がれていくようにと願ってやみません。
I pray that this week, too, each of you will look up at the glory of heaven instead of your feet. May you deeply taste the Word that is more precious than pure gold, and walk strongly in the peace of the Lord, our unshakable Rock.
どうか今週も、足元ではなく天の栄光を仰ぎ、純金よりも尊い御言葉を深く味わいながら、揺るがない岩なる主の平安のうちに、お一人お一人が力強く歩んでいかれますように。

Good morning, everyone.
みなさん、おはようございます。
I saw a nice but slightly surprising scene of a parent and a child playing in a park.
公園で遊ぶ親子の微笑ましい、しかし少しハッとさせられるような光景がありました。
A young child happily shouted from the top of the slide, "Mom, look at me!"
幼い子どもは滑り台の上から「お母さん、見ててね！」と嬉しそうに叫びます。
The young mother answered, "I'm looking," but her eyes were on her smartphone, typing a reply to her friend.
若いお母さんは「見ているよ」と答えますが、その目は手元のスマートフォンに向けられ、ママ友からのＬＩＮＥの返事を打っていました。
Finally, the child started crying and said, "Mom, you are facing me, but you are not looking at me!"
ついに子どもは泣き出し、「お母さん、僕の方を向いているけど、僕を見てない！」と訴えたそうです。
Actually, isn't our relationship with God just like this?
実は私たちの神様との関係も、これと同じようになっていないでしょうか。
Today's society is full of information and noise. Many "windows" — like daily worries, other people's opinions, and various desires — are open in our hearts.
現代社会は情報とノイズに溢れ、日々の生活の不安や、他人の目、様々な欲望というウインドウが心の中にいくつも開いています。
We sit in church and think we are "looking at" God, but our attention is completely taken away.
礼拝の席に座り、神様を「見て」いるつもりで、注意は完全に散漫になっているのです。
So, God adjusts the focus of our hearts, which may be clouded by various noises, and clearly shows His unseen figure in our hearts.
そこで神さまは、さまざまなノイズで濁ってしまっているかもしれない、私たちの心のピントを神さまの方から合わせてくださって、見えない神様の姿を私たちの心にはっきりと映し出してくださいます。
That is the first step to becoming a "pure-hearted person."
それは「心のきよい人」への第一歩です。
Let's enjoy the words of the Bible together today.
今日もみことばを一緒に味わっていきましょう。
Now, let's look at the sixth teaching of the Eight Blessings.
さて、八福の教えの６番目です。
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
「心のきよい者は幸いです。その人たちは神を見るからです。」
When Jesus said these words, the Pharisees, who were religious leaders, cared most about the word "pure."
イエス様がこの言葉を語られた当時、「きよい」という言葉に最も敏感だったのは宗教指導者であるパリサイ人たちでした。
For them, "purity" meant following rules perfectly so that no dirt would come in from the outside.
彼らにとっての「きよさ」とは、外側から汚れを持ち込まないための「儀式的な正しさ」でした。
They washed their hands carefully in a set way before meals, polished the outside of their cups and plates brightly, and never went near people who were called sinners.
食事の前には決められた手順で念入りに手を洗い、杯や皿の外側をピカピカに磨き上げ、罪人とされる人々には絶対に近づかない。
They tried very hard to avoid outside dirt in this way.
彼らはそうやって外側の汚れを避けることに必死でした。
However, Jesus strictly criticized them, saying, "The inside of your cup (your heart) is full of greed and selfish desires, isn't it?"
しかしイエス様は、「杯の内側（心）は、貪欲と放縦で満ちているではないか」と彼らの偽善を厳しく指摘されました。
The word "pure" that Jesus used here is "katharos" in Greek.
イエス様がここで使われた「きよい」という言葉は、ギリシャ語では「カタロス」と言います。
This word was used for things like "100% pure precious metals with nothing else mixed in."
これは、「不純物が混じっていない、純度100％の貴金属」といったものに使われる言葉でした。
In other words, Jesus did not want a surface-level purity covered by rules, but an honest and pure heart with "no other motives mixed in" toward God.
つまりイエス様が求められたのは、ルールで外側を完璧にコーティングした表面的なきよさではなく、神様に対する動機に「他の不純物が混じっていない」、まっすぐで純粋な心のあり方だったのです。
What is a "heart with nothing mixed in"?
「不純物が混じっていない心」とは何でしょうか。
It means "not having a divided heart, but having a pure focus on God."
それは「二心を抱かない、神様への純粋なフォーカス」を意味します。
We often say we love and rely on God, but at the same time, we want to hold onto the security of "money."
私たちはよく、神様を愛し、神様に頼ると言いながらも、同時に「お金」という安心も握りしめておきたいと願います。
While we work for God to please Him, another reason (a mixed thing) like "wanting to be praised and accepted by people" gets mixed in somewhere in our hearts.
神様に喜ばれたいと奉仕しながらも、心のどこかで「人から褒められたい、認められたい」という別の動機（不純物）が混ざってしまいます。
This "divided heart" makes the water of our hearts cloudy and takes away our spiritual sight.
この「二心」こそが、心の水を濁らせ、私たちの霊的な視力を奪う原因なのです。
Jesus promised, "People with pure hearts, meaning people without divided hearts, will surely see God."
イエス様は「心のきよい人、つまり二心がない人たちは、たしかに神を見る」と約束されました。
This does not mean seeing God's figure with our physical eyes.
肉眼で神様の姿を見るという意味ではありません。
When our hearts focus only on God, we will be able to "clearly see" God's loving hands and guidance behind daily events that we thought were just chance or bad luck. This is an amazing promise that our spiritual sight will be healed.
心が神様ただお一人に向かってピントが合ったとき、これまで単なる偶然や不運だと思っていた日々の出来事の背後に、神様の確かな愛の御手と導きを「はっきりと見出せるようになる」という、驚くべき霊的視力の回復の約束なのです。
The clearer our hearts become, the more we realize that this world is full of God's grace.
心が澄み渡るほど、この世界は神様の恵みで溢れていることに気づくのです。
Here, let me introduce a story about what happened to a certain Christian.
ここで、あるクリスチャンの身に起きた出来事をご紹介します。
At his workplace, he was moved to an unimportant job for an unfair reason that was not his fault.
彼は職場で、自分のミスではない理不尽な理由で閑職へと追いやられました。
His heart was completely clouded by the strong noise of anger and worry about the future, thinking, "Why do I have such bad luck?"
「なぜ私にこんな不運が」と、彼の心は怒りと将来への不安という強烈なノイズで完全に濁りきっていました。
Even when sitting in church, his head was full of thoughts like "How can I get my honor back?" He was in a state of a "divided heart," facing God but looking at a different screen in his heart.
礼拝の席に座っていても、頭の中は「どうやって名誉を取り戻すか」という思いでいっぱいで、まさに神様の方を向きながら心は別の画面を見つめる「二心」の状態でした。
Then one day, something happened.
そんなある日のこと。
At a church gathering, a close Christian friend bravely told him this:
教会の交わりの席で、日頃から親しい信仰の友人が、あえて彼にこう告げました。
"Lately, your body is here, but your heart is empty, and you are always looking only at 'your own bad luck'."
「最近のあなたは、体はここにあるけれど心はうつろで、いつも『自分の不運』ばかりを見つめているね」。
At first he was angry, but when he went home and had a quiet time to pray and read the Bible, his friend's sharp words and the Bible's words pierced his heart.
最初はカチンときた彼でしたが、家に帰り一人静まってディボーションの時を持ったとき、その友人の痛い指摘と開かれた御言葉が、彼の心をまっすぐに刺し貫きました。
He was shocked.
彼はハッとしました。
He realized that while he thought he was praying, "God, help me," he was actually staring only at the screen of "problems" with red eyes, and he had looked completely away from God.
自分は「神様、助けてください」と祈っているつもりで、実は神様ではなく「問題」という画面ばかりを血走った目で凝視し、神様から完全に目を逸らしていたことに気づかされたのです。
"Lord, please clean my cloudy heart and let me look only at You," he prayed, changing his prayer to focus 100% on God Himself.
「主よ、私の濁った心をきよめ、ただあなただけを見つめさせてください」と、彼は神様ご自身に100％のピントを合わせる祈りへと変えました。
Then, an amazing thing happened.
すると驚くべきことが起きました。
The unfair job change and his tough reality did not change.
理不尽な人事や厳しい現実は変わっていません。
However, when his focus on God became 100%, the situation was no longer a "problem" for him.
しかし、神様への関心が100％になったとき、彼にとってその状況はもはや「問題」ではなくなりました。
Instead, he began to clearly see the Lord's sure guidance, realizing that this difficult place was exactly "the place where God sent me."
むしろ、その困難な場所こそが「神様が私を遣わされた場所だ」という、確かな主の導きがはっきりと見え始めました。
When the mixed things in his heart disappeared, he saw the true figure of God behind his worst bad luck.
心の不純物が消えたとき、彼は最悪の不運の背後に、確かな神の姿を見たのです。
Near the end of my sermon, I want to ask you a slightly tricky question.
説教の終盤で、みなさんにややイジワルな質問をしたいと思います。
Actually, I told a very believable lie in this sermon.
じつは私は今回の説教で、まことしやかに嘘を言いました。
What do you think it is?
何だと思いますか。
I hope no one says "Everything!"
「ゼンブ」という人はいませんよね。
Actually, I said, "Pure means a 100% pure precious metal," but there are no 100% pure precious metals in this world.
じつは「きよいというのは、純度100％の貴金属」と言いましたが、この世界には純度100％の貴金属というのは存在しません。
For any metal, the highest purity limit is 99.9999････%. No matter how much human science advances, it can never be 100%.
どんな金属でも、最高の純度で99.9999････％が限界でして、たとえどんなに人間の科学が発達しても、100％にはできないのです。
It is interesting, isn't it?
面白いですね。
If we apply this to ourselves, we can never keep our hearts 100% pure by our own strength.
これを私たち自身にあてはめてみると、私たちは自分の力だけで、心を100％純粋に保つことなど、決してできないのです。
Like the Christian brother earlier, if we relax our minds even a little, muddy water like "worry" or "anger" quickly rises up, and our hearts split in two.
先ほどの兄弟のように、少し気を抜けばすぐに「不安」や「怒り」という泥水が湧き上がり、心は二つに割れてしまいます。
However, what is impossible for humans is possible for God.
しかし人にはできないことも、神にはできる。
Humans cannot make their hearts 100% pure, and that is exactly why God steps into our hearts.
心を100％きよくすることは人間にはできない、だからこそ神が私たちの心に介入してくださる。
If you notice the cloudiness in your heart, run to Christ on the cross and ask for your heart to be washed by the Holy Spirit, just as King David cried out, "Create in me a pure heart, O God."
もし自分の心の濁りに気づいたならば、ダビデ王が「神よ、私にきよい心を造ってください」と叫んだように、十字架のキリストのもとへ走り寄り、聖霊による心の洗いを求めるのです。
Everyone, for this coming week, please be brave and look up from the screen of "problems" that tries to steal God away from you.
皆さん、今週一週間、あなたから神様を奪い取ろうとする「問題」という画面から、どうか勇気を出して顔を上げましょう。
No matter how unfair the situation looks, throw away your divided heart. Please make a choice to focus 100% on Him, saying, "Lord, I will look only at You."
